Even before COVID-19 about 50% of US adults reported experiencing loneliness. Over the last two decades, people are spending less time with others across all age groups. In fact, those aged 15-24 reportedly interact 70% less with their friends than 20 years ago. And that loneliness has consequences. Poor social connections can be devastating, including reportedly a 29% increased risk of heart disease; a 32% increased risk of stroke; and a 50% increased risk of developing dementia for older adults.
How can we turn this loneliness epidemic around? Take notice of those around you - your neighbors, friends and family. You can be part of the solution! Spend time with them. Get to know them better and truly care for them. If you feel lonely let it be known. Most likely, you'll both be blessed!
