Probiotics - The Good Bacteria for Intestinal Health!

We usually think of bacteria as being "bad" but there are "good" bacteria as well. Probiotics are good bacteria that are beneficial to intestinal health. Probiotics basically help break down and move food through our intestinal tract.

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are the beneficial bacteria you'll hear about most. Yogurt, kefir, kombucha teapickles, sauerkraut and other fermented foods are examples. These may help those with such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, lactose intolerance, intestinal gas and inflammation and those that have recently taken antibiotics as they kill good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. 

Therefore, many with intestinal issues turn to probiotics. However, studies show only about 10% of this good bacteria survive stomach acid. For ostomy users and others looking for more bacteria to live in the intestinal tract priobiotic supplements are used that can introduce millions of live bacteria into the digestive system which is far more than natural foods can provide.  

Probiotic supplements are considered safe for most people. However, some individuals with immune system issues and other health conditions shouldn't take them. Please talk to your doctor first before introducing probiotics to your diet.
