Auto and motorcycle accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries, accounting for almost half of new spinal cord injuries each year. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center’s “Facts and Figures at a Glance 2021”, there are approximately 296,000 Americans currently living with SCI, and about 17,900 new SCI cases each year. About 78% of new SCI cases are male. The average age at injury has increased from 29 years during the 1970s to 43 since 2015.
